History of Swimming

Swimming is a wonderful sport which combines endurance and touch of grace, not to mention speed. Competitive swimming began as early as ┬áthe 1930s. However before that even, prehistoric drawing have depicted what resembles swimming. Swimming’s entrance into the Olympics was in 1896. The swimmers competed in the 100 meter and the 1500 meter Freestyle. Backstroke was a late addition in 1904. I should mention however that prior to 1912 women were not able to compete in the Olympics as swimmers.

However in today’s Olympic games, the men’s and women’s events are very similar except for the Freestyle. The Butterfly was only classed as a separate stroke in the 1950s, before that it was seen as a variation of the Breaststroke.
